Emily Saucier Receives Mother Teresa of Calcutta Service Award

This year, St. Michael the Archangel High School implemented the Mother Teresa of Calcutta award which recognized one male, and one female student for service to God and to others.  The female recipient was Emily Saucier, a member of the Our Lady of Mercy Class of 2005. Emily spends most of her time away from school in service to children and senior citizens.
Saucier, a student ambassador and the 2008-2009 Warrior school mascot, serves others at St. Michael High School by getting involved in the school's Easter Basket program, the Katrina and Gustav neighborhood clean-up projects, and as a volunteer athletic trainer with the school's sports medicine program.  She especially loves helping to host parties for underprivileged children through the school's Christian Service Program.  At Our Lady of Mercy, Emily serves as a volunteer volleyball coach and also served meals after recent hurricanes to aid workers at the OLOM Parish Activity Center.
Most rewarding and long-lasting is Emily's relationship with the Lake Sherwood Village retirement home.  While obtaining hours for her senior service project for St. Michael High School, she fell in love with the residents and they became fond of her as well.  At the retirement facility, she called bingo, helped with painting and also assisted with other resident projects and activities. Above all, she was there with residents to talk and listen as their friend.
"I have spent so much time there, that they have now offered me a job assisting the activities director," said Saucier.  "It is like having dozens of grandparents that care about me, and I love them."
This rewarding experience has influenced Saucier in her desire to become a nurse practitioner upon graduating from college.
